STORYTELLING
"Great leaders don't just spout statistics", opined the HBR back in 2023. "They tell stories".
Evolutionary theory and academic studies back up this claim, with a recent HBR-led study finding that while the impact of statistics on beliefs tended to fade by 73% over a single day, the impact of a story faded by only 32%. Similarly, Stanford Marketing Professor Jennifer Aaker explains that stories are 22 times more engaging than facts alone. Ultimately, the neurological and physiological theory behind a unique homo sapiens desire for stories is a fascinating one, which explains why everyone from neuromarketers to political candidates now use stories as a key part of their engagement strategy.

In today’s fast-paced world, facts inform, but it is stories that inspire (inspire us to act, feel, buy, workout, vote). A masterful narrative can unlock emotions, spark action, and build lasting relationships with your clients and stakeholders.
I am a misinformation researcher & writer. I recently delivered a TEDx talk on fake news, to an enthusiastic 600-strong crowd in Austria.
Combining science fiction, evolution & misinformation data, the audience appreciated seeing deepfakes and a twisted narrative in real time.

As a Hartford Funds thought leader, I created engaging articles for brokers to help them understand how to use stories, emotions & metaphors to engage (existing & prospective) clients. Check out 'Money: a Love Story', and 'The Cortisol Effect' or download the PDF link on the left.
Telling a story that taps into emotion and follows a classic storytelling arc is a game-changer for disruptive start ups seeking funding. In this video that I created for a clean energy start-up,
Framing a start-up's journey in this persuasive tone didn't just represent an appeal for funding. It invited investors into a world where their involvement could translate into something truly meaningful and memorable - something bigger than us all.

I've been published extensively in the non-fiction space. As a former research methods lecturer, everything I create is deeply data led & often complex.

However, it is sometimes necessary to move beyond facts & theory, and to harness, instead, the power of emotion. I recently authored a fast-paced political horror novel (that has garnered 5-star reviews) for exactly this purpose. The novel Upload subsequently explains the real threats communicated by authoritarian theory in today's fast paced, social media-driven political world, using a deeply exciting, emotional and engaging story. Check out this recent book trailer, narrated by Chase Matthews, Head of Government Liaison for the fictional pre-IPO big tech firm Levanter, to find out more.
As part of my lecturing on an executive MBA programme, I engage students with the science & art of storytelling, explaining how it can help their brands, companies and clients to connect in a deeper way. The ability to interweave charismatic rhetoric, pathos, logos, ethos and facts into a compelling narrative is not only effective, but inspiring and memorable.

Storytelling needs to be uniquely tailored to your audience to really hit the target. If you want to change minds, persuade, build loyalty, inspire action or close a deal, you can't just share information, or be generic in your approach. No matter how complex a topic, it can & should be shared in an entertaining way, engaging with the rhythm of a story & a clear arc.

From cartoon avatar narrated shorts for kids & teens to complex authoritative white papers on politics, leadership or sports governance, no topic is off the table when it comes to the need to establish a deep connection with your audience.
